The Senior Staff Associate will serve as part of IRI’s multidisciplinary team engaged in its mission to enhance society’s capability to understand, anticipate and manage the impacts of climate in order to improve human welfare and the environment, especially in developing countries. The IRI is a catalyst for the research, creation and provision of science-based outcomes that address climate risk. Our approach is based on collaborative partnerships with local, national, regional, international, public and private institutions facilitating the open exchange of ideas, information, and technology between many disciplines and regions.
The Senior Staff Associate will focus efforts at supporting research on seasonal and subseasonal climate forecasting and applications. The primary responsibilities will be to assist in advancing seasonal and subseasonal forecast products at regional and national scales, tailored for climate-service use in developing countries (such as in tropical agriculture and forecast-based financing), and based on dynamical multimodel ensembles from global forecasting centers. The position will involve forecast development at national/regional levels using IRI tools, further development of those tools, creating documentation and training materials, and instructing on their use during training courses, both at IRI and in-country at National Meteorological Services.
Develop seasonal and subseasonal climate forecast products at national/regional levels using IRI tools, including CPT, PyCPT, and IRI Data Library.
Create documentation and training materials for seasonal and subseasonal climate forecast methods, products and tools.
Provide training and capacity building at different national and international events, training in other countries, at conferences, symposiums and workshops.
Support proposal development and write documents that integrate climate forecasts with different applications (eg tropical agriculture, forecast-based financing).
Guide MA students or interns in conducting seasonal and subseasonal forecast product-related tasks.
The candidate will receive minimal supervision from the Senior Research Scientist, and will function within general guidelines, goals, and objectives developed with the supervisor or designated project collaborators. The candidate will exercise independent judgement in the analysis, and write-up of project synthesis, and proposals within flexible parameters.
