Serving as part of the California Sea Grant Science Integration Team, the Research Coordinator will assume primary responsibility for the day-to-day administration of all competitive marine science research and education programs. The Research Coordinator reports to the Director and provides advice in the areas of long range scientific and policy planning of the California Sea Grant research and education programs. The incumbent will prepare reports, write and submit research plans and proposals, coordinate and participate in workshops, meetings, and advisory committee activities, and liaise with university and agency officials, industry, and the public.
The Research Coordinator will solicit, receive, arrange review of and help select research proposals to recommend for funding from diverse sources, as well as, solicit and review applications for the various fellowship programs administered by California Sea Grant. This includes: 1) drafting the requests for proposals and applications and coordinating the dissemination of requests using listservs, website, and other communication tools; 2) setting up proposal and application submission opportunities using eSeagrant, Sea Grant’s proposal management system; 3) following up on requests for information about California Sea Grant funding opportunities and providing guidance on proposal and application submission; 4) working with potential investigators and students to facilitate their understanding of the funding opportunity requirements; and 5) coordinating proposal review by soliciting qualified reviewers, managing the review process, and communicating results to investigators and students.
The incumbent will coordinate, manage, and track State Fellows to assess programming interests and agency priorities to inform the work of California Sea Grant’s research investment, outreach programming, and other training opportunities. The Research Coordinator also will coordinate the review of annual and final reports submitted by funded researchers, and help to identify and follow up on noteworthy accomplishments and impacts to communicate to funding agency partners. This component of the job involves interaction with funded scientists, California Sea Grant’s Communications team and other Extension Specialists, and agency partners.
In general, the Research Coordinator fulfills primary responsibility for a specific area of research within a broader research grant program initiative, and develops knowledge about and remains current with the program’s focus areas as well as community issues. The incumbent will have a background in and provide research-based information and leadership in one of the targeted areas of coastal water quality and/or resources, coastal community sustainability, or marine ecosystem-based management or other topics of importance to California Sea Grant.

- Occasional out-of-town travel is required, mostly within the state of California.

- Advanced degree in related area and/or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training. Ph.D. in related field preferred. Academic background and experience in selected area of research required.
- Background and ability to provide research-based information and leadership in one of the targeted areas of coastal water quality and/or resources, coastal community sustainability, or marine ecosystem-based management or other topics of importance to California Sea Grant with 4 years of work experience.
- Demonstrated strong knowledge of science, the scientific method and familiarity with marine or environmental science.
- Proven knowledge of marine resource priorities for the State of California and of federal agencies in related fields.
- Proven knowledge of organizational and operational aspects of federal and state agencies, universities throughout the state and ability to negotiate decisions with funding agencies and principal investigators.
- Demonstrated experience with research proposal and fellowship application administration, including request for proposal development, review committee recruitment, merit review, proposal evaluation and decision-making, and result/decision notification.
- Demonstrated capacity to comprehend and interpret scientific publications and reports and identify and summarize major accomplishments and impacts of interest to funding agencies, stakeholders and the public.
- Demonstrated capacity to read, comprehend and interpret scientific proposals and identify qualified and unconflicted external reviewers.
- Proven program planning and project management skills. Demonstrated experience with identifying, initiating, and carrying out projects and activities with state and federal agencies with interests in research and applied science.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to advise management and/or advisory committees on project-specific recommendations, program priorities and long-term direction in all scientific areas of the program.
- Proficiency with word-processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation (e.g., Powerpoint) and email software using Mac-based platforms.
- Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, develop potential solutions, implement appropriate solutions, and evaluate results or progress.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers and teams. Proven ability to interact comfortably and professionally with faculty, university administration, government scientists, agency representatives, the public and stakeholders.
- Proven ability to adapt to interruptions and a fluctuating workload, organize work and prioritize tasks to meet established and variable deadlines, and function effectively under deadline pressure to fulfill assignments on schedule.
- Demonstrated good judgement and decision making skills. Proven experience maintaining confidentiality in all matters.
- Must have a valid Driver License.
